Where did they come from? – 2024-25 edition

A quick look at how the current Seattle Thunderbirds roster was acquired. A great deal of thanks to Alan Caldwell (smallatlarge on X) whose blog and spreadsheet provided great reference and confirmation of the information below.

Forwards:

#9 Coster Dunn – Drafted 7th rd in 2020 WHL Draft. (This was Seattle’s own pick but it went on a tour before coming back to Seattle. It came back to Seattle in the trade that sent Michael Horon to Prince Albert. It had been in Prince George and Moose Jaw before that. It originally went to Moose Jaw in a trade that added Brecon Wood to the TBirds roster.)

#11 Finn Bagley – Drafted 5th rd in 2023 WHL Draft. (5th round pick acquired from Kelowna as part of deal for Seattle’s 2nd rd pick in 2027. Same deal to acquire pick used on Popil.)

#14 Sawyer Mayes – Acquired from Calgary as part of trade that sent Sawyer Mynio to the Hitmen. (Mynio drafted by Seattle in 2020 WHL Draft with Kamloops’ 3rd rd pick which was acquired in the trade for Tyler Carpendale. Carpendale was taken in the 6th round of the 2015 WHL Draft with Seattle’s own pick.)

#17 Brendan Rudolph – Drafted 7th rd in 2023 WHL Draft with own pick.

#18 Colton Gerrior – Drafted 4th rd in 2023 WHL Draft with own pick.

#22 Simon Lovsin – Drafted 2nd rd in 2021 WHL Draft. (2nd rd pick from Tri-City in package for Seattle’s own 2nd rd pick in 2021 draft.)

#23 Hayden Pakkala – Acquired from Lethbridge as part of trade that sent the rights to Jordan Gustafson to the Hurricanes. (Gustafson was taken in the 1st round of the WHL Draft with Seattle’s own pick.)

#24 Brayden Holberton – Drafted 10th rd in 2022 WHL Draft with own pick.

#29 Nathan Pilling – Acquired from Edmonton as part of trade that sent Gracyn Sawchyn, Lukas Sawchyn, and Tracen Ashley to the Oil Kings. (Gracyn Sawchyn was acquired from Red Deer for a conditional 2nd rd WHL Draft pick. Lukas Sawchyn was drafted in the 1st round of the WHL US Prospect Draft in 2022. Tracen Ashley was taken in the 5th round of the 2023 WHL Draft with a pick acquired from Edmonton under unknown condition according to Caldwell. We believe this is the conditional pick included in the deal sending Simon Kubicek to the Oil Kings. Kubicek was taken in the 2nd round of the 2018 CHL Import Draft.)

#81 Brayden Schuurman – Acquired from Moose Jaw for Cooper Ernewein, a 2025 4th round WHL Draft pick, and a 2028 3rd round WHL Draft pick. (Ernewein was drafted 8th rd in the 2023 WHL Draft with own pick. The 2025 4th round pick was acquired as part of the trade that sent Sawyer Mynio to Calgary. Mynio drafted by Seattle in 2020 WHL Draft with Kamloops’ 3rd rd pick which was acquired in the trade for Tyler Carpendale. Carpendale was taken in the 6th round of the 2015 WHL Draft with Seattle’s own pick. The 2028 3rd round pick was Seattle’s own.)

#86 Braeden Cootes – Drafted 1st round of 2022 WHL Draft. (1st round pick acquired from Prince Albert in exchange for 1st round pick in 2022 WHL Draft, 2022 3rd round WHL Draft pick, and 2022 6th Round WHL Draft pick. The 1st round pick originally belonged to Kelowna and was acquired as part of a deal for Dillon Hamaliuk, Jake Lee, and Cole Schwebius.
[Dillon Hamaliuk was taken in the 6th round of the 2015 WHL Draft with Saskatoon’s pick which was acquired in a trade for Sam Mckechnie. Mckechnie was acquired from Lethbridge as part of package for Riley Sheen, Carter Folk and a 3rd round pick in the 2015 WHL Draft. {Sheen was acquired from Medicine Hat for Jacob Doty. Carter Folk was drafted in the 4th rd of the 2011 WHL Draft with a pick acquired in a trade with Medicine Hat for Scott Ramsey. Ramsey was acquired in a trade from Swift Current for Robbie Newton. The 3rd round pick was Seattle’s own.}
Jake Lee was drafted in 1st round of 2016 WHL Draft with Seattle’s own pick.
Cole Schwebius was taken in the 10th round of the 2016 WHL Draft with Seattle’s own pick.
] The 3rd and 6th round picks were Seattle’s own.)
